A week at Seymours
By Hanna Kesic
A week at Seymours Solicitors gave me the opportunity to step beyond the classroom and experience what working in a law firm is really like. Throughout the week, I was able to complete a variety of tasks across property and private client work, which gave me an invaluable insight into the many responsibilities involved in being a solicitor.
One of the first tasks I undertook was drafting a mortgage report and carrying out a property report investigation. Perminder guided me through all the information and documents relating to a property and taught me how it should be presented. This allowed me to see how important clear communication with clients is, as a solicitor must be able to identify potential issues and present them to the clients in a clear and accessible way. Following this I was able to complete two more reports independently, which I was very proud to produce as I was able to see the skills and knowledge I developed all come together.
Ravinder also taught me the importance of strong communication and confidence while dealing with clients and external organisations. He gave me the opportunity to contact the Land Registry by telephone and write my first letter to a client. Both experiences pushed me outside of my comfort zone and introduced me to the level of professionalism and accuracy expected from a solicitor.
I was then able to learn about private client work by attending three separate client meetings with Mollie, where I observed the process of making Wills from beginning to end. Mollie thoroughly explained each stage to me and was extremely knowledgeable when answering every question I had. I was also introduced to the codicil process during a meeting with Poonam for a client that wanted to amend their Will. Poonam took the time to explain the process and gave me various research tasks to complete throughout the week. These tasks deepened my knowledge and ensured that I fully understood the process I had observed.
The meetings I was able to attend were one of the most valuable parts of my experience, and I am extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to observe Preeti, Poonam and Mollie working face-to-face with their clients. Watching them demonstrate professionalism while also building genuine connections was incredibly inspiring. Their example strengthened my aspiration to become a lawyer and support clients with the same knowledge, thoughtfulness and expertise that they demonstrated.
The welcoming and engaging environment at Seymours was truly exceptional. I will always remember the support and insight that everyone shared with me, which has left me hoping to be able to return to this environment and continue learning from this incredible team.
